Be transformed by the renewing of your mind... Romans 12:2 (HCSB)
I love those before and after makeovers, either on houses or people. Seeing the change and what could be is always fascinating. But I remember watching a TV programme where the camera crew visited the last three months later to see what she looked like and she actually had returned to her 'before' look. When asked why, her response was, 'I loved the new look, but it was too difficult to keep it up'. She reverted back to her previous state because her mindset hadn't changed.
The 21st century is the age of the 'quick-fix'. We can change almost anything quickly making it appear fantastic. But for sustainable transformation, we need to change the way that we think. Change needs to come from the inside before it has any external and lasting effect.
And transformation, real change, is time-consuming. It often involves a lifestyle change. One that is evident in everything that you do.
I was talking to a friend who lost huge amounts of weight. I asked her the secret and she told me. It's actually not a secret, she just eats differently and exercises not just in the gym but now cycles as part of her lifestyle instead of taking the car. And, she walks to the shops to buy food. She's now a comfortable size 12 after years of being double that. Her reason for the change, 'I was sick and tired of not being able to find nice clothes to fit'.
Stop trying the 'quick-fix' life. Yes, you may get results but they will be short-lived. Take your time, let the Father change you from the inside, so that you can be transformed on the outside.
Father, too often, we seek instant change, like we crave fast-food. May we take time to listen to you as you change us. For some, this may take a lifetime. But long-lasting transformation is truly awesome.
